ABOUT DOUG YOUNG

Doug Young grew up in Hawaii. Artistic at an early age, he never thought this as a profession until he lived and worked in SoHo, at O.K Harris and with Duane Hanson. He has been a full-time artist-painter since 1973, which makes over 45 years in the art industry. With the use of 70’s photorealism style, he has created Hawaii’s contemporary imagery in his mixed media and paintings. Because of his hard work and dedication, he was awarded one of the first Individual Artist Fellowships by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

Aside from paintings, Doug Young was awarded several large art glass commissions. You can find the art glass pool floor created by him at the Hawaii State Museum’s outdoor Sculpture Garden. He also designed the five large glass murals at Kapolei’s Judicial Building Complex.

Doug Young’s background spans from Hawai’i, Iowa, New York and Germany. He grew up in the islands, received his BFA from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; attended NYU in New York City, worked for Duane Hanson in Soho and Koln, and did some graduate work at the University of Hawaii

In New York in the early 1970’s, he was the assistant for the late realist sculptor, Duane Hanson(click for slideshow) , worked for Ivan Karp at O.K. Harris in Soho and assisted sculptor Luis Jimenez Jr., and painters, H. N. Han, John Clem Clarke, and Eleanore Mikus.

As a painter, he has done solo and group exhibitions of his photorealistic watercolors nationally and internationally.

His works and commissions include The Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts: Kapolei Judiciary Building (5 art glass murals),Hawai’i State Art Museum Sculpture Garden art glass floor, the a large Koi mural at 1132 Bishop St. (on Fort Street Mall), The Estate of James Campbell – Executive Offices in Kapolei, The Environmental Protection Agency – San Francisco, Security Pacific National Bank – Los Angeles & San Francisco, The Contemporary Museum, and the Honolulu Art Museum.

He has work displayed at Alan Wong’s The Pineapple Room, Ala Moana Center. Kakaako Kitchen at Ward Centre.

He is one of the first recipients of the Individual Artist Fellowship Award (1995) from the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts which recently awarded him several large public art glass commissions that traveled him back to Germany for fabrication.

Doug is married to the artist/sculptress/jeweler, Babs Miyano-Young and they have two daughters in their 20’s.

He has been a full-time artist since 1973. Doug is usually painting for private home commissions.

A long time waterman/surfer/hunter with deep connections and love for these islands is reflected in his subject matter and meticulous work.
